Inspired by a moment of pure joy during a winter training run in Alaska.
There is something extraordinary about the happiness of sled dogs running through fresh snow.
During an exhausting period of race training in Alaska, Leila set out with her dog team after too little sleep. As the dogs leapt and barked, eager to run, she suddenly became aware of their remarkable energy. In that moment, their excitement seemed to transform into colour.
For the Joy captures that experience: the movement, freedom and sheer pleasure of dogs doing what they love.
Rich blues give way to warmth and light as the team surges forward. Expressive splashes of colour and energetic brushwork convey the excitement of the moment, while the dogs emerge in vivid detail.
The leading dogs, Zala, Daisy and Kermit, were inspired by Siberian Huskies belonging to English champions Melanie Hannam and Rob Cooke.
More than a painting of a sled-dog team, For the Joy is a celebration of the happiness that can appear unexpectedly, even in moments of exhaustion.
